Background on the Historc Kappa House
The four story Georgian style row mansion, designed by famed architect
Leon E. Dessez, FAIA, 1858-1918, was completed ion 1908 as a private residence. Dessez,
also served as principal architect of the Admiral's Residence at One Observatoary
Circle (known today as the official residence for the Vice President of the
United States), and the historic Minor Teachers College Building. He
designed many other private residences in the Metropolitan area and was employed for
three years on plans for the Washington Monument.
Originally built as a residence and following a brief period as a dance
studio, the Historic Kappa House was purchased by the Chapter in 1949. It
was placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the US Department
of the Interior in 1985. This designation recognizes the historical signicance
of the property, its classic architecture, events and programs associated
with it and accomplishments of the Chapter members who contributed
to the rich history and culture of the Washington DC community and the Nation.
